Redefining sustainable wood.

Wood is one of the most warm, welcoming and unique materials used in sustainable design. But in order to continue to use wood and maintain healthy ecosystems, we need to come to terms with the sustainability and restoration of forests. The more we understand how the natural world works, the more we can live in harmony with it.

The heart of Deep Greene Woodworks begins and ends in the forest. It is not an exaggeration that every detail has been considered during our harvesting and processing. We are committed to producing all our products in such a way that contributes to healing the earth and increasing the value of the woodlands from where we harvest.

Restoring.

Our passion and knowledge of the natural world has inspired us to be creative and innovative in our harvesting process so that we are not only protecting, but restoring the ecological health and biodiversity of the forest.

We select trees with aesthetic interest for our veneers, not just the biggest and oldest in the forest. These trees have little value to the landowner but are of great value to the spalting process. Once the trees are on the ground and cut to proper lengths, we drag them out with horses, not skidders and bulldozers, so as not to disrupt the surrounding land and ecosystem.

We are often asked if we replant trees when we cut others down, but in most healthy forests, the replanting is already done by Mother Nature. And now, with better access to the sun and water, the existing saplings tend to grow well, as they are most likely from seed of nearby larger trees and thus, have the benefit of inheriting proven genes for that specific area.

By always sourcing our timber with these principles in mind, we are able to offer unique, sustainable, architectural grade spalted maple surfaces, responsibly.

Reducing.

We source, process and sell in the regional area of PA, OH, MD, reducing transport routes, carbon emittance and shipping delays. Once the horses drag the timber to the road head we transport them the modest distance to our spalting facility in a full log truck.

Refreshing.

The resulting veneers form the palette of materials to design, build and install unique and innovative, commercial and residential pieces that will stand the test of time and remain out of landfills. Living and working spaces will reap the benefits of having refreshing, cleaner air and a more peace-filled surrounding in which to thrive. Spalted maple is a perfect complementary contribution to modern, healthy biophilic design.

Declare.

Deep Greene Woodworks believes a trusting partnership starts with full transparency. You need to be assured that the products used in your design are sustainable and worthy of your trust. Deep Greene Woodworks is committed to this goal and therefore carries the Declare label on our spalted maple veneers.

Declare is a platform created by the International Living Future Institute, for designers, builders and specifiers to quickly find healthy building products that meet their project requirements.

The Declare label is a “nutrition label for building products” - disclosing all intentionally added ingredients and residuals at or above 100ppm (0.01%) present in the final weight.
